Completion of the 1970 Tour de France 911 ST
Our restoration of the Porsche works 1970 Porsche 911ST is now complete. The car is one of seven factory ST’s from 1970 and was the car chosen by Porsche to be entered for the 1970 Tour de France Automobile. Before the event the car was pulled back to the Porsche competition department and modified specifically for the event. This meaning that the car varies from all other ST’s and has many one off features.
The car was specified whilst at the factory to be made as light as possible to try and beat the factory Matra Prototypes. Porsche wanted to use the reliable 911 rather than a prototype on the bumpy French roads but the French re-surfaced the TDF route before the event, giving 1st and 2nd to the Matra’s and 3rd place went to this 911ST.
Being a one off car meant that countless hours of research went into this restoration. Visits to the factory, meetings with ex-works mechanics who worked on the car and studying of period photographs have enabled us to carry out the restoration to an exacting standard and gained us 2nd Place at Salon Prive (1st place was another Historika restoration). It’s always good to get some recognition for our hard work.
We hope to enter the car into a few events over the coming years and have back out on track where it made it’s name.
